How To Choose The Best Mountain Bike Helmet

Back in the day it seemed as bad as hiding a piece of foam on your head. While the picnic cooler liner has been the protective power of the bike’s helmet base since the mid-’80s, the comfort, convenience and aesthetics of the elements have come to such an extent that today’s MTB Skid Lads are a fashion statement. As important as The bad.

Choosing the “best” mountain bike helmet is like choosing the perfect bike – it’s all important that you have (and wear) one. That said, head shape, riding style, and personal preference mean that some helmets may be better than others.

“What should you consider when looking for a good helmet? Helmet safety standards

helmetBy law, every bicycle helmet sold in the United States since March 1999 must meet the minimum safety standards of the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). Other certifying organizations came and went before 1999 and some (Snell, ASTM, CE) are still available, but either voluntary stamps are approved or applied in specific applications. It is important to reject the preference for US certification because even though CPSC is widely used throughout the world, some countries have adopted their standards.

Most standards follow the same protocol. The helmet is mounted on a subform that measures the G-force (G) effect after counting on an enol for one to two meters. Persistent head injury occurs at 400 Gs while 300 Gs produces unconsciousness with possible neurologic impulse. Helmet straps, coverage coverage, and durability are also tested immediately.

Perhaps more valuable to the consumer is the quality that does not provide you. The CPSC and others set a minimum requirement based on the data collected in the laboratory. While you can’t have permanent brain damage with a helmet, most certification companies set a failure threshold of 300 Gs – a force, at least, to knock you unconscious! The quality also doesn’t tell you how far it goes, at least. After all, a lab is not a trail and I am finally coming back when I have been able to predict the fall from altitude, speed and temperature to my preferred surface shape.

What is MIPS?

helmetFrom our MIPS primer, “MIPS is a thin layer of material that moves between your head and your helmet … Allow your helmet to rotate over your head while still giving it a smooth ride. ۾ wear snugly. ” The concept of slip aircraft makes sense in theory, but if not implemented properly, it is no more than a jack-up of helmets at prices that are safer (and cheaper) than just MIPS. Here are more complete backgrounds on MIPS and more prominent points as to why MIPS could be more fiction than reality.

  1. The concept of slip aircraft requires a complete sliding layer that many companies are not employing properly. The layer interface either completely encloses the helmet or fails to provide proper sliding material.
  2. Scallop (especially with hair, oil, and scalp) is Mother Nature’s MIPS.
  3. Adding a layer for MIPS boosts companies to reduce EPS liner, which is more important in reducing head trauma.
  4. Overall, there is limited research on MIPS.
  5. A round, smooth helmet can only be as good as the slip-capable aircraft provided on MIPS.
  6. MIPS will make a helmet less secure, but lose sleep if your next favorite is a helmet.

Helmet fit

helmetWhen it comes to helmets, the fit is synonymous with safety, but the fit is not standardized under any tests. It is up to you to determine the appropriate helmet fit. The shape of the mold is chosen by individual helmet manufacturers, as some helmets will fit you better than those I find fit. Here are some rules of thumb to fit a half-shell and full-face mountain bike helmet:


  • The inside of the helmet should be in contact with your entire upper and lower wrists, just above the forehead, without interrupting the look.
  • The one-size-fits-all ring system is tight enough to fit your scalp with a helmet.
  • The more expensive helmets have two to three height adjustments to further adjust the fit for the back stabilizer.
  • The straps should be tight enough that the helmet does not move more than an inch above the surface.
  • The straps meet at a Y that is arranged just below the ear.
  • When tightened, check the strength of the buckle to give it a quick tug.
  • If the helmet operates an inch or more above the steps above, it may not work for your head. Pad and a mold that improves your head.

A properly designed full face should look very good on the stick. So worry, this squashy foam padding will soon drop out where it feels right. Make sure there is no gap between the helmet and the head.  The cheek pads should feel strong enough against your cheeks that you cannot completely puff them up and at this point it is a little more difficult to speak. With the Chen’s strap tightened, grab the Chen’s bar and push the entire face forward; Your skin should go with it. If you plan to cover a neck bracelet, combine it to ensure consistency.

Helmet material and construction

helmetExcept for a variety of shapes, vent orientations, tensioning systems and other features, nothing is more important than a sandwich-able cushioned foam liner between the outer shell and your head. Liners are made from expanded polystyrene (EPS) beads that disperse the energy of impact while being damaged, bringing a slow stop to your head. The EPS can be adjusted to a density that complements the application of the helmet (soft and fast for slow effects). Some companies employ several foam bags to get the best out of both.

Except for the outside shell, we all see ourselves packing perishables for a picnic. In addition to providing a more agreeable surface for pinstripes and decals, the outer shell protects the crush able liner and provides a smooth surface so that the helmet slides with a screw instead of a cover. Entry-level helmets generally include plastic shells with EPS, while higher types of lids are attached to liner in-mold during polystyrene expansion.

If your budget allows, in-molding is highly recommended for two important reasons. First, by the process of nature, in-mold requires a high quality shell that protects you and the ES liner better. Second, because the shell and the liner are essentially the same, the dentures look more like those that help identify the bottom crack in your ESP that would otherwise be covered with dead space between the two adhesive layers. Foam liner, straps, and out of proper fit, every other helmet features either greater comfort or convenience. These features are also the main reason why the cost of a helmet can be up to $ 160 higher than that of a single CPS C standard. There are no bells and whistles, so I address some of the more common features.

Helmet ventilation

helmetThe ventilation port is strategically placed so that it enters the air and channels it to the exit point, thus passing through the convection. The front vents are better for determining the ability of the helmet to be replicated. Given the density and thickness of the foam liner, the ability to protect your head always varies with why.

To increase ventilation with either larger or larger ports, the denser foam or liner needs to be strengthened which can actually move more G-force to the head. In other words, more events are not always better. Many companies do well to describe the cooling capabilities of their helmets, but testing is challenging and subject to many limitations. In this case, just a few degrees of change in the angle of the head makes. A huge difference in how the air is channeled through the vents. Other controversial factors include a proper fit, hair, and sweat.

Facilities Features

Lens Compatibility: Most DH helmets work well with most specs, but today’s shell height, straps, and occidental coverage can buy new helmets for the purchase of new sunglasses. When shopping, bring your goggles and / or shades together to make sure they play well with the helmet.

Brightness Adjustment: Depending on how you rub your night light, adjust your mount to see which vent setting works best.

Visor: Examine the visor and its associated points for ease of use and potential stability issues. Lower and helmet visors come out of place using a smaller plastic stem. While the higher end helmets offer toll-free screws for adjusting and removing.

POV Camera Mount: Some helmet camera mounts are ready, though often require your own modification. As for the lights, if you insist on putting your camera on top, make sure the helmet is enabled.

A note on Aftermarket: The quality of the helmet encourages anything that comes out of the helmet because of the risk of wear. Please make sure any changes such as a light or camera mount will be released at the appropriate centimeter pressure.

Ways to buy a bike helmet

helmetDue to the importance of getting the right fit, try before buying. Never buy a used helmet. It is not possible for the previous owner to be aware of micro-fractures hidden in the ESP liner. Change your helmet after the accident. The damage may not be visible to the naked eye, but it is not there. Know your land and ride style. Find the right tools for the job. Spend what you need to protect your mind. Safety and fit are the most important, you need to love it too!
